Lose Fat, Gain Muscle, or Both?
I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that you want to do one of the above, right? Great! Depending on which one you want will determine which fitness regime and nutrition plan is best for you. You'll also need to consider your body type, which will affect things as well. So before you set off on your journey, let's do a little homework first.
Determining Your Body Type
Most people fall into three categories: ectomorph, endomoprh, or mesomorph. Huh? Think of it as your appearance and the ease or difficulty of losing/gaining weight.
- Ectomorph: These are your typical skinny guys or girls. Yep, I'm one of them! We tend to have a small build with lean muscle. Our limbs are long, chests are flat, and shoulders are small and we have a super high metabolism and are classic "hardgainers". We need large amounts of calories in order to gain weight. Our workouts should be short and very intense, specifically focusing on the big muscle groups (chest, back, legs). Supplements are highly recommended to give our bodies more of what it needs. If possible, we should eat before bed to prevent muscle breakdown when we sleep. On the plus side, we can lose fat pretty easily.
- Endomorph: The endomorph has a body that tends to be solid, yet soft and pudgy. Unfortunately they can gain fat pretty easily. They tend to have shorter builds with thicker arms and legs. There muscles tend to be thick and strong, especially in the legs. Endomorphs and phenomenal squatters and powerlifters. Their metabolism tends to be slow, and gaining weight is always an issue. Cardio is a must for the endomorph. Supplements are typically not needed as much.
- Mesomorph: A mesomorph is your natural athlete; one with a large bone and muscle structures. These are your classic bodybuilders. They find it quite easy to gain or lose weight. Because of their natural strong bodies, they have the perfect frame for building strong, defined muscles. Weight training suits them well and gains in muscle mass are typically fast. However, with the gain in muscle comes an easy gain in fat, so watching calories is a must. A nice blend of cardio and weight training is perfect for the mesomoprh.
